Germany has a rich and complex history, from ancient civilizations to modern times. EARLY HISTORY: In the early Middle Ages, Germany consisted of various tribes and kingdoms, but was finally unified under the Holy Roman Empire in the 10th century. The empire lasted until 1806, when it was dismantled by Napoleon Bonaparte. In 1871, the modern German Empire was founded under Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. World War I : The country became a major industrial and military power and was involved in World War I (1914-1918). Germany suffered greatly after the war, leading to economic instability and political instability. The Treaty of Versailles didn't just blame Germany for the war—it demanded financial restitution for the whole thing, to the tune of 132 billion gold marks, or about $269 billion today.
